BRAMPTON - The Flower City Happy Gang will be recruiting new band members and performing on May 12 at the Flower City Seniors Recreational Centre.

The performance from the Happy Gang starts at 3:30 p.m. and there is no charge to watch. The band is hoping to recruit six or seven new members. They will accept any type of instrument, but they would prefer a base or keyboard player.

"We won't turn anything down. We could have people with bagpipes and we'd use them. What we need is a bass player, and another lead instrument," said Jim Dunham, the keyboard, vocals, and sounds controller of the Flower City Happy Gang.

Aside from Dunham, the band has eight other members. They include: Mimi Brown (guitar, mandolin, vocals), Carston Mackay (guitar, banjo), Grace Longfield (banjo, vocals), Francine Labella (vocals, percussion), German Reyes (Guitar, vocals), Marie Chalmers (drums), Ted Harris (guitar, vocals, M.C.), and Madie St Amour (guitar, drums, vocals).

The Flower City Happy Gang is a multilingual band, and the members are excited for new opportunities to add more languages. To date, they can sing in English, French, Spanish and Italian. Almost everyone in the band can also play two different instruments.

"We don't have any kazoos, but we mix our stuff up. We throw in the fast songs now and then, and a bit of rock and roll," said Harris.

"Seniors are younger nowadays. Before, once you reached 65 you were old. But now, seniors are so much younger. This is a good way to keep active," said St Amour.

The band hopes to have the opportunity to play at Gage Park in Brampton some day. Starting in a few weeks, they will be playing at the Dominion Seed House Gazebo on Sunday evenings between 7 and 9 p.m.
