They're off to see the Wizard.... Jennifer Cusimano, left to right, Brendan Jeffers, Holly Taylor, Susan Pringle, Scott Abel and Angelo Mantzios star in Brampton Music Theatre's production of The Wizard of Oz at Rose Theatre from April 9 to 12.

BRAMPTON - A very wicked witch, fantastic flying monkeys and a real tin man are coming to Rose Theatre next week.

Yes, you guessed right-- it's The Wizard of Oz.

Brampton Music Theatre is presenting the stage show and they are pulling out all of the stops to make this their biggest and best production yet.

Michael MacLennan, artistic director and choreographer, can barely contain his enthusiasm when he talks about it.

"I'm very excited and knowing the movie so well, I wanted to do a show I knew people would come and see," he said.

"I'm keeping it very traditional and similar to the movie, which so many people love."

The show will be both a visual and aural spectacle, according to MacLennan. There are 70 cast members, which includes 25 children. There will be big dance numbers, stunning drops brought in all the way from California, and even flying characters thanks to an American company which is creating special harnesses for several of the cast members.

"We wanted to make it magical and I think it will be," said MacLennan.

The costumes will also add to the enchantment of the show. While Dorothy's ruby red slippers and Glenda's cr?me and silver gown are stunning, it is the Tin Man's costume that takes the cake.

Scott Abel, who plays the metallic character, approached his workplace, Fulton Engineered Specialties, about making a steel suit. The company, which makes pressure vessels, had an engineer design a special suit that makes the one worn in the 1939 film look shabby. The creation weighs 20 pounds and took close to three weeks to create.

"I learned all the dance moves, then I had to relearn them all in the tin pants," Abel said. "As soon as the suit is on, I fall right into the role."

The girl at the centre of it all is no stranger to Brampton Music Theatre. Holly Taylor, who played Anne in the company's recent production of Anne of Green Gables, is returning to a title role as Dorothy. She said it is a dream to play the role, especially with cast mates Scott Abel (Tin Man), Angelo Mantzios (Cowardly Lion) and Brendan Jeffers (Scarecrow).

"The best part is that they are so different, so the characters are completely unique," Taylor said. "They are all so funny and we all get along, just like the characters do in the show."

And what would The Wizard of Oz be without Toto? A real canine named Spike has been cast in the role. Apparently, he was born to be a star.

"Spike is wonderful as long as I have bacon in my hand," Taylor said. "He is perfect for the show and is such a good dog."

The Wizard of Oz runs at Rose Theatre in downtown Brampton on April 9, 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. and April 12 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Several shows are already sold out, with the majority of tickets available for the newly added Wednesday show.

Tickets cost $15 to the Wednesday and Thursday shows, and $25 for adults, $23 for students/seniors and $18 for children 12 and under for the remaining performances.
