Stay safe this holiday weekend
Friday May 16 2008

As we sit on the verge of the first long weekend of the summer season the anticipation for many is palpable. The cottage, the beach, or just grilling in the back yard— most of us can’t wait.
However, sadly the Victoria Day weekend can be one of the most tragic times of year for carnage and death on our highways.
Peel police are targetting aggressive and unsafe drivers all month long in the annual spring Project Safe Driver campaign.
The crackdown on bad driving started May 3 and ends Sunday, May 25.
Speeders, red light runners, impaired drivers, and motorists who turn or change lanes unsafely will be the targets of the increased enforcement on Brampton and Mississauga streets.
The roadworthiness of passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles will also be a focus of the campaign.
The annual blitzes have become a local tradition and emphasize both enforcement and education, according to police.
The OPP will also be patrolling the 400 series of highways, and will be using two planes to keep a watchful eye from the sky.
Safety, however, starts with each and every one of us.
We encourage you to act responsibly on the highways and waterways.
This week, May 13 to 19, is also National Road Safety Week.
More than 450 people were killed on Ontario roads last year alone.
