BRAMPTON -
The federal government has decided to block a $1.3-billion takeover bid of MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates' (MDA) space division based out of Brampton. Ottawa doesn’t support Jim Prentice, Canada's minister of industry, stated last week Ottawa would not support a deal that would essentially sell off Canada's space technology. MDA announced the sale of the division that developed the distinctive Canadarm space shuttle technology to U.S. munitions and rocket components maker Alliant Techsystems Inc. earlier this year. The sale sparked concerns among federal politicians who called on the government to prevent the move and protect Canada's space technology. MDA, based out of Vancouver B.C., acquired the Canadarm business from Brampton's Spar Aerospace in 1999. Instead, MDA has been awarded a four-year contract deal with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) valued at $109 million.
