BRAMPTON - Never one to let good food go to waste, local entrepreneur Richard Patywich is sure his recipe for success will help revitalize an ailing restaurant business in downtown Brampton.

Patywich is the new owner of Klassic Korner, a 1950s-style diner located at the intersection of Church and Main streets.

"We basically rescued the Klassic Korner is what we've done," Patywich said. "I am a local resident here and didn't want to see this restaurant fall by the wayside."

Patywich, 55, stepped in just when it seemed the diner was about to serve its last meal.

He said the previous owner, who ran the restaurant for the last 10 years, was tired of the restaurant business and decided to hang up his apron for good.

Patywich said he just couldn't let the restaurant close its doors, not when it still has potential to be a viable business.

After consulting with his family, he decided to take the plunge and buy it, Patywich said.

"They (staff) were having their Christmas party here and I walked in and I looked around," said Patywich adding, "I talked to the owner Jimmy and he just basically said that he was tired and that he'd had enough. He wanted to retire; he hadn't had a day off in 15 years. I looked around the place and thought to myself that this could be a really good opportunity."

Patywich knows a thing or two about restaurants.

As a kid, he worked along side his parents who owned a concession stand at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens.

He has worn a number of hats since then from being a restaurant owner to running a catering business.

"I have been in the restaurant business all my life. I've got a vast history in the food service industry," said Patywich.

Downtown Brampton is going through a revitalization phase, which is ideal for local businesses to thrive.

As such, the long-time Brampton resident said he jumped at the chance to take the venture over.

"This was a whirlwind thing. This happened in the middle of December. He (the previous owner) had no lease in place; he was set to close down the building and planned to just sell everything in an auction, which would have been a shame."

With the exception of maybe repainting the place, the addition of televisions and extending the seating capacity at the counter, Klassic Korner has remained the same with respect to the 50s d?cor. And so has the phone number 905-455-1955.

What has changed, however, are the hours of operation and parts of the menu.

The locale features the same ice cream malt section and the wholesome, homemade style food.

Perhaps the biggest change to the menu is the addition of deli sandwiches.

"We have the Montreal smoked meat sandwiches, which is something that downtown Brampton doesn't offer right now," Patywich said. "It's one of the big things we've added to the menu."

The subtle changes have not only managed to win over a few more customers, but they have also garnered the approval of those who frequent the establishment frequently.

"We've got a lot of encouragement from the locals," Patywich continued. "A lot of the old customers are happy that we are maintaining this place."

The restaurant now operates seven days a week- 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
