Man gets six years for abducting children Thursday July 2 2009

A man was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping two young Brampton children for ransom last year.
Manish Sharma, 27, has four years left to serve on that sentence after he was credited for the time he has spent in pre-trial custody. He was sentenced June 23 and is expected to be deported to India after serving his sentence.
Sharma had just come to Canada and moved in with a local family in May 2008 while he looked for work and got settled. A mutual acquaintance in India had arranged it, and the couple had similar help when they came to Canada, so they said they were happy to open their home to him.
For two weeks the two children, aged 6 and 4 at the time, called him “uncle”.

At-risk youth get valuable work experience Thursday July 2 2009
Nearly 200 disadvantaged youth in Peel Region will gain valuable work experience courtesy of a summer job program supported by the Ontario government. "This program will expose our young people to positive work experiences which will provide leadership opportunities and hopefully help shape future career choices," said Linda Jeffrey, Brampton Springdale MPP.The jobs are being offered through the Youth Opportunities Strategy, which aims to help at-risk youth acquire skills and experience with local employers and police services. The province has doubled the number of jobs available through the program. In total, some 4,000 spots will be available for youth across the province.Locally, YMCA Peel Employment and Community Services has recruited employers and youth, and Peel Regional Police Service has recruited...
